The west side of Crete is not one interchangeable port. Each of the five has a different coastline, atmosphere, and route family. Use this short rule to skip the comparison overhead and move straight to a cruise.

Aerial view of Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island, west Crete
Balos Lagoon · Kissamos departures Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island sit at the northwest tip of Crete — about a 90-minute sail from Kissamos.
  • Want Balos & Gramvousa? → Kissamos. Closest port, four departure formats.
  • Staying in Chania town and want to walk to the boat? → Chania Old Port.
  • Hotel west of Chania (Platanias, Maleme, Georgioupoli)? → Kolymvari for the Agioi Theodoroi run.
  • Family with small kids who want calm water? → Souda for Marathi Bay.
  • Driving south, want the wild Libyan Sea side? → Paleochora for Elafonisi.

Fast Decision Paths

Five ports. One simple decision.

Use these paths to narrow by departure base, timing, and cruise mood.

Kissamos — for Balos & Gramvousa

If Balos Lagoon is the photo you've already saved, Kissamos is the port that gets you there. Four departures: morning lux, afternoon lux, classic Balos & Gramvousa, and a sunset run.

Cruises from Kissamos

Chania Old Port — for the Venetian harbor

Pick this if you're staying in Chania town and want to walk to the boat. Two departures: the full-day cruise to Agioi Theodoroi and the shorter sunset sail.

Cruises from Chania Old Port

Kolymvari — closest to west-Chania resorts

The right port if your hotel is in Platanias, Maleme, or anywhere west of Chania town. Same Agioi Theodoroi route family, no city traffic.

Cruises from Kolymvari

Souda — for Marathi Bay & Akrotiri

Different coastline entirely. Marathi Bay's calm shallows on the Akrotiri peninsula, perfect for families. Day or sunset.

Cruises from Souda

Paleochora — for Elafonisi & the south coast

The Libyan Sea side. Pink-sand Elafonisi and the wild Kedrodasos cove are unreachable from the north — Paleochora is where you board for them.

FAQ

Questions Guests Commonly Ask Before Booking

These questions help with the bigger booking choice before you pick a specific sailing.

Kissamos. It's the only port with direct catamaran departures to Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island — about a 90-minute sail. From Chania Old Port the route is much longer and not commercially run as a single day cruise.

Yes — choose a Chania Old Port departure. The boats board right at the Venetian harbor in the city, so you skip transfers entirely. From most Old Town hotels it's a 5–10 minute walk.

They share the same route family — Agioi Theodoroi Island and the Chania north coast. Kolymvari is closer to west-Chania resorts (Platanias, Maleme); Chania Old Port is for guests staying in Chania town. The cruise itself is similar quality.

Souda. The route goes to Marathi Bay on the Akrotiri peninsula, where the water stays shallow and calm. Easy boarding, easy swimming, short transfer from most Akrotiri or Souda-side hotels.

From Paleochora on the south coast. The drive from Chania to Paleochora is about 90 minutes through the mountains, but it's the only way to reach Elafonisi and Kedrodasos by sea. The road route to Elafonisi is much longer and ends in a beach-only day, not a cruise.
